Hiding in the dark from the cops
So, tomorrow, May 19, will be the two year anniversary of Daughter-Type's car accident. It was one of those stupid, new driver accidents that are unfortunate, but happen. Everyone was ok, but there were complications.
Shady-Boyfriend, who has long since exited the scene, was the owner of the insurance policy. Daughter-Type was the owner of the car and was the one paying for the insurance. Don't ask me how she managed to buy a car without proof of insurance, but Shady-Boyfriend earned that name for a reason.
So, on May 18, 2008, Daughter-Type finally realizes there are better guys out there to be had, and hands him his walking papers. He gets pissed off and cancels the car insurance, which somehow covered her car, or possibly her but not the car, I'm confused on this issue. The bottom line with this little detail, is that she had been paying for the insurance, and he canceled it. Retroactively back two months. Then on May 19, 2008 when she plowed into the other car, Daughter-Type did not have any car insurance.
Just take a moment and digest that.
We got her a lawyer and he told us, in cases like these, they have two years to file suit or they lose the right, which is where we are now. Apparently the sheriff had been by the house some time during the day on Friday to serve her the papers, but she moved out a year ago and I work during the day. More conversation with the lawyer and he said, again, that they have until tomorrow to serve her or they're out.
Which leads to me sneaking around my house last night with the lights off, hiding from the cops, who never showed up anyway. I know, I know. There are worse things in life that your child could do. I mean, she could be a serial axe murderer or something. Right?
