I'm going to change my name to GameHarlot. Or at least give that name to the next toon I create in any game I play, unfaithful wench that I am. I just don't seem able to be able to stick with one MMO since I tried out Star Trek Online back in January. Yes, I did the open beta, and I think I blame that for my current funk.
Anyway, my latest foray into the MMO wilds is Age of Conan. And I must REALLY have wanted to play this game because it took over twelve hours to download the trial. Yes, yes, there are probably faster ways to get all the updates, but for all that I like to play on computers, I really haven't the slightest clue what to do with them from a technical aspect.
So this morning, after the DL from hell, I logged on and created my first toon. She's a Cimmerian Dark Templar. Dark Templars seem to be the Shadow Knights/Death Knights of this game. In the hour and a half that I played this morning, which includes creation and playing with the various settings, I got her to level 5. I know, not a mind blowing record time, but at least I grasped the basic combat aspects and didn't just stand there and let a level 1 rat gnaw me to death. FFXI I'm looking square at you!
My first impressions are that it's an ok game. Visually not on the scale of EQ2 or WoW but ok. Questing is questing is questing, nothing new there. Conversations with NPCs reminds me of a typical console game or even Dragon Age (which I played on the PC since Daughter-Type took all her consoles when she moved last year). Combat itself is different that what I'm used to, though. There is NO auto attack. You have to hit a button to swing your weapon, or you'll stand there and get gnawed to death. (See above paragraph.) It sort of encourages my button mashing tendencies though. In my final 20 minutes of play this AM, I realized there are combo moves you can do. This sort of reminds me a bit of EQ2's heroic attacks. I also had my first character death. Probably about the time I realized there were combo moves and I got distracted by the shiny...
So, after only two months of playing EQ2 and no WoW AT ALL!!! I have a new game. We'll see how long this one lasts.
