I'm so very frustrated

I try many of the new MMOs when they come out.  Right now I'm enjoying and still plan to play Star Wars The Old Republic.  There's just so much to do and see there, not to mention I love the story lines, so no worries, I'm not giving up just yet.

The latest contender is Guildwars 2.  First of all, I don't have such a great track record with free to play games.  I only go back to EQ2 every now and then because it's comfortable and familiar and that is one of the best crafting systems of any game I have played to date.  So I can forgive Sony for wimping out and going with the F2P model.

I tried Runes of Magic for a while because Daughter-Type and Boyfriend were playing with some of their friends.  I wasn't much impressed and was annoyed that you had to RENT your bag space beyond, what, two bags?  That's just silly.  And yes, yes, EQ2 makes you buy bag space and bank slots but I was grandfathered in with many others so several of features I had under the subscription plan carried over.

As for regular subscription based games, I've tried RIFT which I still do every now and again.  However that one is going to have to go.  I do have a rule that if I don't log in for 4 months, I drop it.  There was Star Trek Online, which has gone F2P but I really didn't like it much as a subscription, so it's long gone.  There were a few others, such as LOTR and another one that I can't remember the name of.  The point being that they just never stuck.

So now I'm trying to get the GW2 beta to download.  And am having nothing but problems.  Of the three other beta's I've been lucky enough to get in one, this one is the least user (old fart who is is barely able to turn the computer on) friendly.  I always assume when there is a problem with these things that I've done something wrong.  Usually that's the case.  But I have a feeling not all of this is true here.  They have hidden the link to the beta way down in the forum under some strange topic heading, which is making it difficult to locate.  That's number one.  That's if the forum is working and lets you access any of the links.  I would think with such an event they'd have a big CLICK HERE FOR BETA button.  Maybe they're saving that for the actual game client.  Oh yes, and I never did get my email saying "Yippee, This way for beta client".  And apparently, I'm not the only on.e

So I read the directions first, and then again to be sure I didn't skip any important words, and click the link.  The directions said to choose the SAVE AS not RUN option and save the .exe file in some other folder.  I don't why.  They may have said.  I'm thinking there may be some coding/compatibility issue so if it's not in it's own wee file, things will get screwed up later.  What do I know.

Anyway, I click the link, choose SAVE AS, and the little DOWNLOADS screen comes up with every download I've ever done in it.  I clicked the GW2 file, not an .exe file mind you, and the only choice is RUN.  It won't let me copy/paste to a new folder, I'm already out of my depth, so I RUN it.  And it gets stuck at 2%.  I re-run it, 14%.  Fiddle with the firewall to be sure that's not an issue, re-run and go to bed.  Then I get up this morning expecting the thing to be done and it had gotten stuck at 62%.  So I re-started the sucker again and sat there watching to be sure it didn't get stuck again.  Like there's anything I would have known to do to keep that from happening, right?

The thing went through in 25 minutes, yippee!  I figure it was probably because fewer people were on at 5am as I tend to have internet connectivity issues during peak hours.  Ok, finally.  I'm at a log in screen.  The directions had said to log in and get all the patch updates.  But I wasn't sure that I'd be able to find the file again, and I figured since the whole download had gone through I was all set.  I never did save to a different folder, which is a step I'm obviously obsessed about, so I closed out and tried to locate my file on the computer.  Of course I never did find an .exe file.  And yes indeed, when I clicked on the GW2 "file" I did find, it started the download once again.

My point behind all this long ramble, which I needed to get off my chest because yelling about it to the dog was only scaring her, why have they made this beta so difficult to access.  Why no launcher?  Maybe that section of code isn't ready yet?  Maybe they assume all their customers are gonna know how to do all these tricky computer things?  I don't know, but I am frustrated.

I haven't been a huge fan of F2P either (which is part of why I'm leery of people who are all excited about the possibility of TOR going F2P. It seems like the beginning of a bad downhill slope.)

Good luck with the computer programs. Those sound annoying. :(

In my opinion, F2P is a major rip off to the consumer. Not only that, but having the ability to buy, with real money, items that give you an advantage in-game just seems very wrong. I mean, why not just buy your toon off ebay or something like folks have done in the past? I don't know, it just disturbs me too.

The draw here for me is that the game is touting "personal story line". I have very much enjoyed that aspect in SWTOR and so I am curious to see how another company will approach it. Like I say, unless it really grabs me right off, I probably won't stick around, but who knows? I may love it too. I like to think I have an open mind.

As for computer woes, I went home for lunch to take out the doggie (she's such a good, faithful and tolerant girl) and checked on my downloading progress. The DL had finished so I searched for the file, found what I believed the file was, copied and pasted to a new folder, as instruct and then crossed my fingers. Hard to type like that, btw. Then I closed everything down and clicked my new button and presto! It worked!

I believe what happens with computer instructions is like this. Someone gives you directions such as, go to the end of this road and then move in an easterly direction. WTF does that mean? Now if you tell me go down this road and turn left, now I understand. I was looking for a file that had the .exe typed at the end. All I was seeing was "application". Which is what I finally copied/pasted and which worked. So it's all in the delivery, I guess. We'll see what happens from there.

I agree that F2P is a major rip off. I think that people like it as they think they're getting a good deal. But in general, for most to be fun, it costs more than the $15/month you'd pay for a similar subscription game. (And tends to have worse updates/quality, etc.) Plus, like you said, it's kind of crappy that you can buy your way to the top. I mean, I don't mind little vanity items being charged for. But I really, really don't want to feel like I can only be "competitive" (or enjoy what I'm doing) if I shell out an additional $30/month.

Oooh, a personal storyline does sound pretty cool. I've been loving that aspect in TOR as well, so can see the appeal. You'll have to let me know how it goes. If it's great, I'll have to play. (And if it's meh, I'll leave it alone. You can be my guinea pig.)

I'm glad that the file is working now. Yay!

(And awww...doggies. I so miss having one.)
